It is during the end of the year that people begin to reflect on their productivity. It is during the month of December that people start thinking of what it is that they want to accomplish the following year. New businesses are birthed and new ideas are imagined. However, for many it is a never ending cycle of the same mindset.
The reason it is a never ending cycle is because most often we are in the same predicament the year before. We are excited to do amazing things because we know January is coming. However, it does not take long before these “New Year Resolutions” or Goals become the same resolutions and goals from the year before. I believe the reason for this roots back to one thing
How many of us can honestly say that we know how to hold ourselves accountable?
Accountability is difficult to master. If you are not accountable for the small things in life it is going to be extremely difficult to be accountable for the larger tasks and projects that come your way.
It is time that we return back to the basics in order to become the most productive people that we can be. I need to stop before I go any further and talk about productivity. Stop comparing your level of productivity to others levels of productivity. People who are extremely productive on a consistent basis have reached a higher level of accountability. Therefore, it is easier to accomplish a lot because they have a little more discipline. Do not feel bad if you are not as productive as the people in your life. As long as you are doing the BEST that you can do and making a conscious effort to grow in your accountability walk that is what matters.
The Christina Kanu Consulting Basics to Accountability
You Need A Planner- It is so simple. However, many people skip over this step. There are too many things going on to remember everything in your life. A simple or complex planner will change how you operate. You will be able to keep up with your dates, deadlines, goals, events, etc. because there will be a central location that you write these items. Your planner HAS to be something that you have bonded with. Therefore, do not get a cheap or ugly planner if you know you will not use it because it is not stylish. Also, do not waste money on an expensive planner if that is not your preference. Make sure that you keep your planner in a place that you will see it daily.
Start Small- Accountability is a process. You will overwhelm yourself if you try to make yourself accountable for more than you can handle. Start small. Pick a few things daily that you want to make yourself accountable for. For example working out, drinking more water, or paying bills on time. After you have mastered that list then move forward to bigger items. These items may include saving money, working on a business, or decorating your house. Remember what is big to you may be small to someone else and that is ok. Your accountability walk is about YOU and no one else.
Accountability Partner-It is important to share your goals with someone who genuinely cares about you. Not everyone on Facebook, twitter, SnapChat, InstaGram, periscope, or any other social media platform needs to know what your goals are. Honestly, not everyone you are close with needs to know your goals. Share these intimate things with a few people who will hold you accountable. These people will ask you “Did you go to the gym” or “How is that business plan going”. Remember, it is NOT your accountability partner’s job to force you to do anything. They are meant to remind you from time to time and that is all.
Don’t Quit- I know that is very elementary. But you would be surprised at how many people quit something before they can get started. I have been in this place many times in my life. I start something it gets hard and I want to walk away from the project. You have to keep pushing even when it gets difficult or you get busy. Make an effort to see your goals through. There is nothing like being able to cross off a goal on your List of Goals. Whenever you feel yourself quitting just remind yourself of why you started in the first place.
Eliminate Distractions- Take the time to think of the things in life that distract you. This can be friends, family, social media, yourself, etc. Whatever it is you really need to find ways to eliminate the distractions in your life. If this means spending more time alone then do that. If it means deleting the social media apps on your phone every once in awhile do that. If you are not willing to get rid of distractions then you need to really ask yourself how serious you are about accomplishing your goals.
On a scale from 1-10 how accountable are you for your actions? Take the time today to reflect on your level of accountability. After you determine that number select where you want to be this time next year. Do not simply say you are 2 today and want to be a 10 next year. As I mentioned, accountability is a process. Start small and work your way to the top. This will help you to achieve everything that you want to in order become the most productive person that you can be.
